Bridging the Gap between Voice Coaches and Sound Designers in the Theatre: A Conversation with Sarah Nichols and Joey Luck

Sarah Nichols* invited sound designer Joey Luck, her collaborator in a case study conducted as part of Sarah’s RCSSD master’s dissertation, to a conversation about the successes and challenges they experienced during their work together on a university production of Machinal. This was followed by an open discussion about what improved collaboration might look like, as a way to bolster relevance and demand for voice coaching in a theatrical setting, as both vocal coaches and sound designers have a direct impact on the sonic landscape of the show. Moderated by Jacob LeBlanc.*

Vocal Coaching for the Theatre:
Navigating the Varied Vocal Demands of Production

Perhaps you were hired to be the production vocal coach, or maybe you were hired to coach dialects, and then were faced with production demands for actors to have more vocal energy, be louder, be clearer, utilize different parts of their pitch and/or resonance range and stay healthy. Suddenly you are responsible for it all! Expert coaches Geraldine Cook-Dafner,* Jan Gist,* and Andrew Wade* discussed strategies and techniques for successful vocal usage, considering the specific needs of the space, the script and the actors. Moderated by Adrianne Moore.*
